Assuming you are running XP, switch on the wireless enable PC to be added - it will then detect the wireless network. Try to connect, if the wireless network security protect (which it should be) you will then have the opportunity to enter wireless key (for usual set ups) enter this as directed. You should then be connected - firewalls can be a problem and may need reconfiguring. Once a connection is established the simplest way to establish a network to share resources such as disk space or printers is to go through Network Places and use an appropriate wizard

Listen, there are several steps in adding a computer to an existing wireless network it has not been connected to before.
First you need to ensure the computers adapter is compatable with the router. You need to check what the protocal is to a/b/g or b/g or just g. Or in the case of the newest emerging n. You need to ensure that the security settings on the router and the rest of the network matches the computer you are adding. WEP or WPA. If you are adding a computer with 800.11b to a 800.11g or n network that computer will slow down the rest of the networked g/n computers to the speed cababilities of a 800.11b. If the computer you are adding is only 800.11a and the network is 800.11b/g/n you will not be able to add it as the 800.11b/g/n are on the 2.4Ghz frequency while the 800.11a is on the 5.8Ghz frequecy which are totally seperate frequencies. The 800.11a is usually incorperated in business networks as it is much faster and less congested than the other frequency.
So, you need to gather some basic information of the network you wish to connect to. Find out what wireless protocal is being used as well as what security is in use. The computer you are adding must match these configurations. If not, it will not be able to connect. Period. Also, you need to understand that what 800.11 you have in the added computer will perhaps negitively affect the network in speed loss.
You will also need to find out if the network is using MAC address security. In other words using the MAC address of each node on the network to controll who can connect to the network. If so, you will need to know the MAC address of your adapter so you can add it to the routers configuration of listed MAC addresses in the security section on the routers web configuration page.
You can discover the MAC address by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig/all and pressing enter.
The MAC address is the PHYSICAL address. Write this down as it will be needed to add to the routers MAC address list.
After you have this information you will first need to add the MAC address to the routers allowed MAC addresses list. You do this by accessing the routers configuration page via a web browser. You type the routers IP address into any browser and the configuration page will open in the browser. If an administrator Password has been configured you will need to enter the password. If a Password has not been created (which it should be for security, otherwise anyone could gain access and take control of your router) just click submit or go or what ever word is used for submitting a password. Your routers configuration page will open. Find the tab for MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the computer you are adding to the network.
Once you have done this you will need to configure the computers adapter to connect via the WEP or WPA password. You do this by one of two means. One if temporary and the other makes a permanent link for the computer to automatically access the network each time you boot up.
Access your WAN (Wireless Area Network) by right clicking on the little computer icon in the sytem tray and selecting "show available wireless networks". A screen with the nearest networks will appear. Click Refresh, just to ensure everything is new. Locate your network click to select then go to the bottom of the screen to click "Connect". A dialog box will appear asking for the password, enter it two times and then click connect again. If you put in the right password you should connect to the network in a few moments. This is the temporary method.
For the permenant method you will need to go into you adapters configuration utillity and do some configuring. lol
Click on the computer icon again. Select "open netowrk connection". This will open a page with all area networks. The LAN connection wil show Disconnected unless your network is a mixture of wired and wirless computers and other nodes on the nework. Ignore that connection. If you have FireFox on your network it will show up in this box. It always shows up as a network connection, but is for different types of uses. So ignore that one too. Locate your wireless connection which usually has the manufacturers name listed as the name. Right click on this and select Properties. Click on the "Wireless Networks" Tab. There you will find a window with the Preferred Networks. Highlight the network you wish to connect to and then click Properties. A new configuration box will open where you will need to enter informaiton in order to automatically connect each time you boot up. On the "Association" Tab you will need to fill in the proper configuration information. I do not know how your router is configured, but however it is, this is what is needed in these boxes. If these boxes are properly filled in already which means the adapter was configured when installed, you will need to click on the "Connection" Tab, which says "Whenever this network is detected windows can connect to ti automaticaly" and place a check mark in the "Connect when this network in in range".
Without further information this is as far as I can go in assisting you to connect a new computer to your wireless network. I hope this is enough information to direct you in the correct path. If not I suggest you obtain this book, "Absolutely Beginners Guide to Home Networking" by Mark Edward Sopes. It is a great book which is chock full of great informaion and is easily read and to understand the directions. I reccommend this book to all my family and friends. Make sure you get the most current edition as things change quickly in these areas. Even if you get the edition from 2004, it will provide all you need to quickly get any network up and running and add new computers, game console nodes, home entertainment systems, video recorders, etc.
