Hey! I feel ecological too! I think we must junk all vehicles and move on to the next mode of exitance... of living in harmony with nature. We were supposed to be bipedal and not four wheeled ripping the earth.

The problem is infrastructure and manufacturing. The car companies aren't going to make the total leap into alternative fuels until other fuel is in high enough supply and vice versa. So the government needs to step in. I'm usually against government involvement and regulation, but here is where I make an exception. Government should subsidize both car makers and fuel companies in the R&D of alternative fuels. The general public wants alternative fuels, and it will happen, but the government can make it happen quicker.

americans pay the high prices because we can, remember that europeans gasoline is more expensive than US, $5 a gallon or so. So Germany for example has a good rail infrastructure mainly using electricity to run off and is Number 2 in the world with solar energy production behind Japan. Bet you didint know that. Also they are huge on wind power and are super conservative when it comes to energy saving.
15 years and the picture will be entirely different. its takes many years to change a countries infrastructure

OIL COMPANIES HOWEVER< DON'T TALK WITH AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS ABOUT PUMPING EXTRA CRUDE

Oil is a big business. Most of the oil companies are no longer American, and the idea of foreign oil is not a problem for them.

What has that got to do with oil independent ?
First we steal Iraqi oil, then we blame Iranians for something , invade them, and steal theirs also, soon enough with this policy , we shall have all the oil in the world, and oil independent !
meanwhile, let put pedal to the metal in our 8 litre engines !!

Three reasons:
Fashion statement, stupidity, and greed.....and the decision makers fall right into the hands of the greedy. We, the U.S. can us our 'own' resources and don't have to depend on the foreigners. Again, stupidity of the decision makers.
