I think that it could be higly casued by cookies or a tempary file Try the following.
Go to Tools then internet options u cah delete ur history while ur there mite as well since u r there. Also empty ur tep internet folder wich contains the cookies and files.
p.s dont worie about cookies bc they will be put back on ur computer once u enter that site again.

The unread email could have been:
1. moved by one of the user defined rules/filters to another directory
2. lying in the bulk/junk folder
3. after the home page was loaded, the email was viewed via another session (In which case, refresh should solve the issue)
If it still doesnt work then you have to give specific details regarding the mail service provider (Yahoo/msn etc) and the way of connection (via http(s) in browser or using client like Thunderbird/Outlook)

you probably have 2 or more pages open, your home page doesn't yet know what you did on the other page
refresh your home page or sign out and then back in

Yeah it happened on mine too I get rid of it by opening the mails.

Visit your mail site again....it is showing 3 new becoz you have been in that site for too long....so the browser could not update it.....

sometimes some mails goes to your "bulk mail" folder. maybe this is why you see that you have 3 new mail. check it and probably you will find your mail in your "bulk mail" folder.

click on the unread, link on the mail....
it will show you unread meassges..
