why is the atomic radius of oxygen more than nitrogen ????

I hope everyone that answered before me understand that a bigger nucleus means more protons, which means that the electrons are ATTRACTED to the nucleus REDUCING the atomic radius.
The correct answer is that oxygen has 1 more electron in it's outer shell (P orbital). Nitrogen has 3 electrons in it's 3 P orbitals meaning that each one can occupy one orbital with hindering or being repulsed by the other 2.
Oxygen has 4 electrons in it's 3 P orbitals, meaning that 2 electrons have to occupy one of those orbitals, this causes repulsion between them, increasing the radius of the atom.

Because it has one more proton in its nucleus, and thus is repels its electrons more than in nitrogen. This repulsion pushes the electrons farther from the nucleus and increases the atomic radius.

If you want an answer, Dan Theman is wrong. POSITIVE CHARGE ATTRACK NEGATIVE, NOT REPEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mashkas is also wrong. It is 2p not 3p
________________________________ 2 2 4________
Oxygen has the electronic structure 1s 2s 2p . So, the p orbitals' electrons are paired. Repultion between electrons weakens the attraction of the positive charge of the necleus (protons). Also what energy level is it, comes in saying why, but both are in the the same energy level!

I have a source to help you:
www.chemguide.co.uk then choose the first chapter in the menu there. it has to do with atomic structure. See basic atomic structure.atomic and ionic radii

lol ... if u knew tt u would have ASNWERED the question
anw... i think it's because the nucleus of the O atom is bigger (8 protons and 8 neutrons) and it has 1 more e- than the Natom as well
hope this helps! =)
