The major reason for unwillingness of a common man to switch over to non-conventional energy are:
1.The set up required for this is expensive and needs more space.
2.Processing time is slow.
3.There is limited awareness about use and technical specifications of these resources.
4.I don't you how you will think about this reason...but I think it is basic reason among all ...the more easy options are available that is non-conventional energy. One we ended up with this surely population will have to use only non-conventional energy.

Main reason(s)? Economics and politics.
Back in the early 20th century, before anyone else realized it was a dumb idea, people around the globe began to restructure their machines, their mode of transport, their businesses---their whole way of life---around the continued use of fossil fuels.
As a result, one hundred years later (today) we now have the monumental headache of figuring out how to make the smooth transition to environmentally-friendly energy sources, without making the global economy suffer any inconveniences. It's not just our laziness in tackling such hard work that's stalling things. It's also going to be an expensive transition, involving billions of dollars in the replacement of every single machine and system you can think of.
Regardless of the cost, most people today do realize that we have no choice but to make the switch. But then there's a second barrier: politics. The world's biggest oil companies and oil-producing countries will naturally hate losing their main source of income. They want to make as much money for as long as they can (or till the greenhouse effect becomes unbearable). So they find legal (and illegal) ways to prevent governments from initiating swifter changes. From forming oil cartels to lobbying in Congress to secretly funding Presidential candidates, they will stop at nothing to protect their interests. Why do you think bringing peace to the Middle East (with all its oil-producing countries) is such an impossible task?

Because the initial costs of building the plants and switching the grids over to that new power supply is very costly.

The oil people have the money and power to restrict alternate energy sources. It's always about money, always, always.
