If you are good at chess, then chess. Otherwise battleships. Involve a little wager and both are made more interesting!
Personally, I am hopeless at chess (never really had someone to play against) so I would choose battleships.

If you are playing online, battleship. Unless of course you have the battle chess game where the pieces fight it out when you move them to different spots on the board.
