You do not need the phone socket next to the PC you could either use an extension lead between the phone socket and the PC or go wireless.
In order to go wireless you will need a Wireless Router and a Wirelss Card for your PC. The type of Wireless Router will depend on your broadband connection if you receive it through the phone line you will need a router and modem all in one, if it is cable you will need a router WITHOUT modem. For your PC you can either have a USB wireless card (easier to install) or a PCI card (need to take case off computer and put it in, more difficult in my opinion). Wireless routers come with the option for security and would recommend using MAC address filtering if nothing else (only allows certain adresses to access the router).
The extension lead would be less expesive but the wireless option allows mre flexibility i.e. a friend comes to stay and has their wireless laptop/PDA can use the internet on their own computer not yours!
As for the Broadband provider I am with BT which randomly drops off for no apparent reason sometimes, tried the helplines and they are not even remotely helpful!

Contrary to 'MOLE', no, you don't BUT you need an extension lead from a proper point with a socket on the other end into which you can plug your filter. This is a small gadget which you can plug in at either end of the extension lead, and by judicious use of two-or three-way adaptors you can have your broadband box, a phone AND your Sky box all connected to the same outlet. Tiscali provide you with two such filters anyway so if you've got more than one wall socket, you can use both; add more filters to other points if you've got them. It doesn't matter which end of the lead you connect the filter to, either - it all depends on your personal situation as to where you've got your various gadgets.

You could always run an extension cord to the computer room from the bedroom like I did. It works fine and I got 3 PCs doing ADSL2+ speed networked. I don't know where you are to tell you who to get your account with so good luck!
