Not a bad category for the Q... Are you asking, WHAT about it?

I find it a way to release if nothing else, and regroup.

I use it also to get into a quiet, contemplative zone, free of distractions.

It need not have any agenda at all, religious or otherwise, just a sense of connecting with the SELF.

It works for me, but it's also a discipline, and should be taken seriously, if not formally. I don't suggest it while driving anywhere, or performing any tasks, and it need not be lengthy in the time span you engage in it, but certainly takes some levels of focus, and aloneness.

theres a lot of types

http://www.appliedmeditation.org/Heart_Rhythm_Practice/meditation_types_of.shtml

but I've been a practioner for 7 years now.

Meditation doesn't add to a persons life, it takes away
all the unecessary junk that a person carries around
in their heads, thus, giving a person clarity, peace,
insight, and inner-knowing. Verbal understanding
is limited, so the meditative experience cannot
be explained verbally by another to be understood.
For example, if you lived in a colorless world where
no one has ever seen or heard of color and one night
you had a dream where you found yourself laying
in an open field and you saw the sky as open, blue
and beautiful as ever, then, suddenly you wake up
and tell people you had an amazing dream, naturally,
those people will ask you to explain. How are
you going to tell explain to them in words what you just saw?
This is why spiritual teachers don't encourage
talking as a way of true understanding, but experiencing as a means of understanding (in all activities including meditation).
I do a buddhist version of meditation of Vipassana.
Here's a site with a lot of mp3's of monks giving talks about
how to practice.

Meditation is a great tool. The fact that you pose this under medicine though makes me worry that you are considering using it instead of seeking professional help, that is wrong and irresponsible. Meditation works best when complimented with traditional methods of healing.
