Because they like to think that they aren't. They like to believe that they are libertarian, but they aren't. They want to make us believe that they are the champions of the common man, the little guy, but they aren't. Modern, left-wing "liberals" are still searching for the socialist utopia. Because of the cold war americans have a mental block against certain terms... even communisim after all was not as bad as the US neo-colonialism and the capitalist plunder... or lets even agree almost equally bad!
Socialism is not a bad word where i live. In fact the better word used is progressive.

Because the two aren't the same thing. Just because there is overlap between two different philosophies does not make them the same thing. Libertarianism and conservatism overlap but they are definitely not the same thing.
