Yes, a true friendship is reciprocal, but don't fall into the trap of thinking that stuff like this can be measured. If you buy me something because you can afford it, I might pay you back by putting valuable time aside for you when you need me. A true friend does not expect anything from you, but is happy when you give. Having said that, a true friend WILL always be there for you when you need them. It might be that for a period of time, they cannot give anything back, but down the track the roles are reversed. If it is always one sided, then I doubt it is a true friendship.

The real question is why you do the things you do in a friendship. Do you give a gift, or treat for a meal BECAUSE you expect the friend will do the same?
Some people are used to other people taking care of them, or giving them more without expecting anything.
if your friends aren't on the same wavelength, and you are feeling taken for granted, you need to make some new friendships!

In a true friendship, a basic rule is to treat your friend the way you would like to be treated. However, as humans, not every day is going to be perfect for everyone. You must allow for those bad days. Disagreements will occur and letting your friend "vent" and just "being there" and supportive can reinforce your bond.

I think the most important "rule" is affection, the others (like reciprocal, respect, honesty) will come naturally in a second time....

It may seem, in some relationships.. that it is all one sided. But, if you could look close enough, you will see that there is always some form of give and take.
