Slavery was the backbone of the South's economy, but the country as a whole did not get rich. By the time the Civil War erupted, the North's economy was based mostly on industry with just pockets of agriculture.
As for selling arms to Britain and France, that happened in both WWI and WWII. That was Germany's main reasoning behind sinking US Merchant ships that eventually drug the US into WWI and PM Churchill gave his impassioned speech before the US Congress asking for more arms sales and further involvement during WWII.
I don't think this is cursing the US.

If either of those were remotely true, then America wouldn't have suffered as it did during the Great Depression starting in 1929. This was a time of strife and intense poverty for the majority of Americans, having the worst unemployment rates during any time in American history. Ironically, it took a second world war to help put the country back on its feet.

i believe some first American settlers became rich if they had the means. slavery saved money, but i think it was the product or trading goods like tobacco and wheat that made the settlers rich and therefore starting a wealthy country. something like that.
