Water is the best thing to take before, during and after exercise. It is better than those so called sports drinks. Your body is giving off water, in the form of sweat, to keep it cool. It has a homeostatic mechanism to control the amount of salt lost during exercise. Most people think your body is losing too much salt which is entirely wrong. Years ago coaches and others working in areas of high heat recommended that their people take salt tablets. This did more harm than good. Your body needs to be properly hydrated. It is common sense to realize that the body is losing water and that water needs to be replaces. As you lose water the salts become more concentrated in the body. The added water will restore the balance needed to keep it running without cramping. P.S. Sports drinks are a big waste of money, the only thing they do is put money in the pockets of people who market them. They are just below the stupidity level of waring rubber suits to lose weight.

No one should advise you not to drink water after exercising. What you need to avoid is drinking too much water during and after you exercise in order to avoid hyponatremia, a dangerous decrease in the sodium concentration in your blood. Sport drinks are an important tool for maintaining your hydration and your appropriate electrolyte balance.

After a strenuous exercise, the body metabolism is at a high.

Therefore, people suggest that we wait till the body cools down a bit before drinking a lot of water.

However, to avoid dehydration people are advised to hydrate themselves sufficiently, before and during exercises as per the expert / doctor's directions.

Water is definitely good for you but maybe you mean in cases of heavy exercise, when water and electrolytes are lost through sweating it is advised that a sports drink such as gatorade be used to preserve your elecrolyte balance

It is OK to drink water after exercise, but not too much as it can mess up the body's salt levels after you have been sweating. If you drink an isotonic drink first it will replace these salts and then its OK to drink water until you have quenched your thirst.

You can drink water, but you should sip it. It causes a chemical unbalance if drank too fast. Because of this unbalance you could get sick on your stomach or even have cramps in your muscles.
