it should be "i am her son"because although the mother is dead one should always consider the fact that the son is still born to that mother, which cannot be denied...

I AM her son (Because you will always be her son)
she WAS my mother (Because she is longer alive and thus can not be your mom anymore)

You're always your mother's son, and she'll always be your mother. It doesn't sound right saying "I was her son." so I guess it isn't right. Nor does "She was my mother."
