Based on my perspective as a pure art fanatics, I wud say that every single or particular data or curve of ur graphic inside the current avatar represents ur every personality trait.
For example, if u choose ur avatar to hav spectacles being wore,
that means u r a nerd...if u choose ur avatar to hav big, long sized beggie-style trousers, that shows that u r a fan of hip-hop/rap.
So every single particular detail you choose to be inside the avatar represents every particular move that u make inside ur life during ur lifetime.
And it will also affect the thought of other people who are the first seeing it. Remember....THE FIRST THOUGHT of other people is really IMPORTANT.

No. It reflects on what you want to "show" people, but, that can be completely differnt from your personallity as night and day...
Just because I want to be this and cant be, but on the computer I can be "anything" I want to be, doesnt mean that I "am" that...
