Both. Americans who have never been abroad buy this line that we come from the "greatest country in the world." It's not just Americans who believe this about their country, and every country I've ever lived in has a touch of this, though most aren't as bad as the US. But I have to say, it really sounds arrogant and ignorant once you've spent a little time outside of the US. At the same time, the knee-jerk reaction to assume that everything American is bad, and that all Americans are ignorant and brash, and to hold America in disdain seems to be a defense mechanism among most people I meet. Some of the things I've heard America blamed for show complete ignorance and a shocking willingness to blame America first for anything and everything. And depending on who is doing the blaming, we get blamed for acting by one side, and blamed for not acting enough by the other. It's a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation, but that is the price we pay for being The world superpower. It was better when there were two distinct superpowers.

I'm British, and we have no reason to be jealous.

We have a stronger currency, free health care, better education system, less corrupt government, better general quality of life, free press, less ignorance, better culture, we are hated by less of the world (even though we aren't exactly popular), we play decent sports, we don't have ghettos, we have a much better human rights record (yours is one of the poorest for a developed country), the best trained military in the world, a proud history, we have more free speech, we do have more expensive goods but they're invariably of better quality, we aren't made up of the cast-offs of all the European countries and we have a very strong economy.

Yet despite all the ways in which we are better than you, we still have to put up with endless American rants about how you are the best, you have the best democracy and better quality of life and freedoms that the rest of the world. This shows both your arrogance and ignorance at the same time, and is bloody irritating, which is why the rest of the world hates you.

I am from Canada and not jealous. I have travelled Europe and USA...both are great but I would prefer to live in Europe or Canada as USA does not have universal health care and I don't feel as safe walking as a tourist in larger american cities as I do in large European or Canadian cities. I think that my fear of walking in big American cities comes from American media and the violence it shows on news and television about gangs and drugs...but still I take no chances. Love to walk along the Seine or the Thames. Arrogance? I think that it is more "pride in country" and "flag waving" coupled with my belief that some americans just don't get out of America to see that there are many great places outside of America too. Having said that...I have enjoyed greatly visiting USA. I would suspect that those from the other side of the pond if never have visited America do not appreciate its wonders either.

There are soooo many countries I would love to visit if not for the high cost of doing so...it is wonderful to experience other cultures, once you get a taste you just want more of it.

It is very sad that because of politics people of the world do not feel free to visit all of the wonders of the world and feel safe and welcome. People I believe are inherently good everywhere in the world. Politics mucks it all up.

Let's face it people, Americans are arrogant as hell but lack behind other so called lesser nations in math, science, and other educational fields. So, why would the rest of the world be jealous when the US depends on goods from outside our own country to drive our economy? We always cry how we're #1 but almost every other country due to our foreign policy, and refuses to back us when we want to bring "democracy" (also known as puppet governments) to so called oppressed countries. Not to mention have one of the highest homeless andmeth problems around. Yeah, I'm sure other countries are just dying to have those problems too.

America as a nation and its government are arrogant. Why do they continue to believe to have to start a war with other nations in order to protect their freedom? This was called for during the revolutionary war, because that is how they became a sovereign nation. Now this "we need war to be free" talk is brainwashing the government uses to justify their war mongering.
The very common conception that jealousy is the reason why so many dislike the US is exactly the arrogance that causes the US to be hated.

Compared to other foreigners the Americans do show a marked lack of respect for other cultures. Combined with the usual ignorance of foreigners this is arrogance.

We used to admire US for its achievements as kids but now it just looks like a country full of psychos who love wars and blood. So arrogance yes jealousy, what do you have to make anyone jealous? Most of you appear to be profoundly dim, for you cant figure out what u do to make you the most hated nation!

Americans are arogant but the rest of the world are not jealous .

and by the way i wanna truly comment on that silly talk about jealousy ; they say " terrorists attacks america because they are jealous , arabs hate america , because they are jealous , muslims are jealous ...etc" what is that stupid idea ? what the hell is that stupid idea? would a man explode himself because he is jealous ????? would an organization istablished and live in danger and gain no money from that because they are jealous ?????? would arab countries has conflicts with israel because of jealousy ?????? why ? did america took their girlfriends and married them ????? jealous ??? what a stupied idea , and an ideal evidence that propaganda could work very good that it makes an educated man blind about the truth when it is clear like the sun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and why didn't muslims become jealous from switzerland? they are better living as indiveduals , more irreligious , and enjoy every thing ? why not Australia? , it's a heaven on earth. why not france , scandanavian countries (sweeden , norway , danemark) ... even their girls are all blond and more pretty than yours , why not Japan????? koria ??? why not canada ??? didn't you ever ask yourself that question ?

could wars happened over jealousy ? could policys put under jealousy ? sir, this is not troy wars , we are in a civilized age , where bigger reasons to hate a country than jealosy .

Me, as an arab and muslim , and never get out of my country (egypt) lived all my life on america , loved america all of my life, and my ultimate wish was to immigrate to USA ... i remember when i was a kid miecky mouse , then 6 million dollar man and bionic woman , then comes all of my heros from marvel to dc , to x-men , all movies from top gun , to police academy till the matrix , titanic , forrest Gump and all others , best food pizza Hut , KFC , fuddruckers , hardies ..etc , drink pepsi , cocacola , wear levies and nike ,my old heros rocki and rambo ( i remember how many times i trained at the music of eye of the tiger) ...etc , and much much more
so how can someone like me hate or become jealous of america ? those like me are too many , but frustrated with the american policy which is all against islam , by itself or by supporting israel .

so the world is angry from the arogant policies of america , but never jealous ? what's the jealousy got to do with the whole thing ( by the way my favorite song when i was teen was what's love got to do with it - tina turner ,... haha )

thanks for listening and i hope that helps , and sorry for my english
