People here in Indonesia, esp the Bataknese and some Chinese usually prefer a boy baby than a girl as to be a descendant for a certain family name. Some also say that when one is pregnant,it is suggested to see beautiful scenery or persons so that the baby will have a nice face.
Once when i went to Singapore, I went into a Hindu temple there and be told about two stones ,one is for a boy baby and another is for girl.People usually worship it when the woman is pregnant.

So many weird superstitions in the Philippines! Other than a similarity in the Indonesian practice about having the mother look at beautiful things for a more beautiful baby, another enjoyable thing about pregnancy is the "craving" stage where you crave exotic foods, the harder to get the happier the woman gets by making her husband's life more miserable. They grab this opportunity because after childbirth and when the child grows up, the father doesn't take much interest anymore. It's, of course, a generalization.

I live in an Asian country, known as Singapore. And although we are one of the fast-growing countries in our region, and known to be one of the most cosmopolitan, I think when it comes to notions of pregnancy, we are very much still the conservative Asians.

Here, pregnancy is only a joyous occasion when you have already been married. If you have a shotgun wedding, it's a bit of a scandal, but probably not as big a shame as if you have a child out of wedlock. Even if it's a conscious choice you make to have a child on your own out of marriage, it is not seen as something desirable at all to do.

I guess we are quite hypocritical in our society, that we know everyone is having sex (it is not spoken of, just understood), and that is largely, if uncomfortably, accepted. So everyone who has sex knows that pregnancy is a risk you take in having sex, even with a condom. However, if you get yourself knocked up, you're immediately put down and derided. And usually just the female. It's a big shame really.

Also, I guess you could say the government sends out this signal of unacceptability to children born out of wedlock. Our country's population is an ageing one, with the old slowly outnumbering the young, so there are many incentives in place for people bearing children (e.g. cash incentives, tax cuts, etc), but if you are not married and pregnant, these incentives don't always apply to you.

In fact, because land is so scarce here, and we live stacked on top of one another in high-rises, you are only allowed to purchase a government-board built apartment (which is significantly cheaper than private housing and make up the bulk to living premises here, but still quite expensive compared to housing prices in other countries) if you are married, or at least of 35 years of age. However if you have a kid, and are not married, they don't recognize your eligibilty to buy an apartment!

But while I think our society has a lot to go to improve the current situation, I understand that the government has to do this for political reasons - we are still, after all, an Asian country, and they have to show that they respect that, as leaders of the country, not just to our own people, but the surrounding countries in the region.

I hope I was able to give you a clear view on the situation here. Are you purely interested about this on a sociological level, or are you writing an essay?

Our Australian Government has seen fit to give every new mother $4,000 for each child she has. I think this is a stupid system because we now have teenagers as young as 15 having babies for the money!
