I have spent a lifetime researching this question. In my opinion, Luke wrote to Theophilus the High Priest and later to the former High Priest his second letter which we know of as the Acts of the Apostles.

The gospels were written out of an agreement between the apostles before they went their separate ways. They were written separately and then collected together at a later date.

The Letters and Acts of Theophilus were written while Luke was in Greece trying to make conversions. You can probably find a lot on the subject in the Greek Orthodox Church websites. Don't be surprised if the interpretations are different as to the text, however. Those letters and acts were originally written in Greek.
