Excerpt... The female mosquito is the only stage that "bites". Most require a blood meal to produce a full compliment of eggs. They will also feed on nectar as do the males. People are well acquainted with female mosquitoes but rarely see the males unless they are in mating swarms. The sexes can be easily distinguished. Both have densely scaled bodies, legs and wings. The females have a long proboscis and sparsely haired antennae. The males have a proboscis, bushy antennae, tufted palpi and the end of the abdomen is modified into external genitalia.

Keep a bottle of beer and some jewels on a table. The mosquito that sits on the bottle is the male and the mosquito that sits on the jewels is the female!

Visually, you have to get pretty close:

In most female mosquitoes, the mouth parts form a long proboscis for piercing the skin of mammals (or in some cases birds or even reptiles and amphibians) to suck their blood. . . . Males differ from females, with mouth parts not suitable for blood sucking.

Make the mosquito bite you: if it did bite you, it's female; if not, it's male. It's that simple.

Female mosquitos demand blood donations from humans.

Mosquitoes obtain energy from plant sugars such as nectar, fruit, sap etc. But for a female to produce eggs, she needs to supplement her diet with blood.
