Snow Covered Mountains....

With a mountain in the backdrop, when the sky is cloudy and the clouds are moving, if you look up , it seems as if the mountains are moving, not the clouds........ So, poetically they are described as "Tall ships made of snow, invading the sun"!!

Well going by the literal context it an be applied to pompous or arrogant people who have mind of their own and in their reckless pretext of things they try to fathom what they can never in reality. So as its impractical to think of an entity made up of snow invading the sun which one can't even look up to, is the culmination of your expression.
