crossing over provides probably the greatest advantage to sexually reproducing organisms.
it allows for exchange of genetic material between the two DNA strands leading to a novel mix of genes and hence the resulting individual will be different from the parents even though it has a mixture of the parental genes.
also in some cases it allows for nullifying deleterious genes by exchanging it for good ones.

sexual reproduction enables mixing of chromosomes just like you shuffle cards, - thus more new combination

in crossing over, you can mix up ALSO the genes that are at the SAME chromosome and therefore are (without the crossover) bound to stay always together during the shuffling
