best thing for a mild sunburn is aloe vera gel-apply a thin layer to the burn but don't cover it with any type of gauze or bandage

drink lots and lots of fluid-the body needs to replace fluid lost from being out in the sun too long-water and gatorade works best. no juice or soda-too much sugar and can make dehydration worse

do not use any lotions, ointments, butters, yogurt, or any food products b/c these things will actually create a barrier between the burn and the open air it needs-which can trap heat and germs which can lead to infection.

take cool baths or showers-warm or hot ones will create more heat to the burned area-which can worsen it and can also cause dehydration

childrens motrin can be used to help relieve pain and swelling.
doseage goes by weight:

12-17 lbs 50mg 1/2 tsp of the suspension liquid
18-23 lbs 100mg 1tsp of the suspension or 2 tablets of the 50mg chewables
24-35 lbs 150mg 1& 1/2tsp suspension or 3 50mg chewable tablets
36-47 lbs 200mg 2tsp suspension or 4 tablets of 50mg chewables
48-59 lbs 250mg 2& 1/2tsp suspension or 5 tabs of 50mg chewables

take these every 6 hours as needed but do NOT exceed more than 4 doses in a 24 hour period

hope this helps

I used Aloe Vera gel that I stored in the fridge and it help wonders this year after a really bad spot of sunburn in May. My skin did not dry out and peel. But being a pale skinned ginger I still have to face life without a tan again this year.

old wives tales aside...a tepid bath feels nice, rub in some aloe every few hours - buy the kind with the lidocaine (mild numbing affect) if itching and burning are bad...wear loose-fitting clothing and drink lots of water. There's not much else that's going to make it go away faster...but everyone seems to have their preferences as to what helps.

also - I don't know your sons' ages...but if they are fairly young and you feel this is a pretty bad burn, consult their physician...children and sunburns can be a more serious situations than adults with suburns - and can lead to dehydration pretty quickly.

what ever you do just dont put regular lotion on them to try to soothe the pain, regular lotion is made to form a layer to trap in moisture...this in turn keeps in the heat from the burn & will cause it to be more painfull & hot & not heal as quickly or as well, make sure you get a sunburn relief gel/lotion or after sun lotion....if you have an aloe vera plant use raw aloe gel it works GREAT & helps to lessen blistering

Cool water in the bath and afterwards use plain yoghurt to cool the skin.

Another good thing for the skin is pure Aloe Vera and I know because I have used it.

don't go for the old myths, get some solarcaine, it's the best sunburn cream I've ever got from the chemist.

vinegar. it takes the sting and heat away. dab it on then wash off later when cooled down. it stops the skin from being to alkaline.

Camomile lotion is very cooling and sensitive for childrens skin. Also keep a cold damp towel around so they can cool themselves where it hurts.

We used Noxema when I was a kid. It's got the menthol so it's cooling.
