Chinchillas only smell, if you don't clean them. Some times you can get away with a full cleaning every two weeks, just "scoop" out the dirty litter daily. It also depends on how what kinds of food you feed them. Chin's need alot of excercise, so be able to "play" with them in a large room with a closed door, they are jumpers, and have tons of energy. A large cage is best as well, sometimes costing a couple hundred dollars. Diet is easy.

I agree hamsters are not the best pets, most do bite...

Guinea Pigs, are alot of work, cleaning every 2-3 days. They can smell really bad, but are very social and fun. Diet is easy too.

Look into a sugar glider, can be very expensive husbandry. They need alot of room (NO CATS :) ) and diet is VERY involved!

Also look into a hedgehog , I have never had one. Can't give much info on them but they are cute as hell!!!!!!

Mice and rats are easy...and can have great personalities...easy care and easy diet...

Or you can get fish...

Ferrets! Most ferrets that you would buy at a pet store or rescue from a shelter are already descented, and as long as you keep their cage clean and bathe them every week or two, they really shouldn't smell too badly. There's also a product called Bi-Odor that you put in their water to lessen any smell from their waste. They are also easily litter trained, which makes them much easier to clean up after!

If you might like a ferret, I'd suggest getting some literature on them first, because they require a good bit of care and attention. But they're friendly, playful, and always entertaining!

I would highly recommend rats--though I would also recommend trying to purchase them from a reputable breeder or rescuer instead of a pet store because you are more likely to get a pleasant, socialized rat.

I like rats and mice. As long as you keep their cages clean they don't smell too bad. Snakes are cool to have around.

i highly recommend rats. as long as you clean their cage once a week you won't have a problem with smell. they clean themselves constantly. i recommend carefresh bedding and you must have two (or more!) same sex rats kept together. they are very social animals and are a lot of fun. good luck!
