This exact thing happend to me as well. I used a flat scewdriver and was able to wedge it between the door and the machine and it opened the door for me. Careful to get it in the right position and only slight pressure is needed to pop it open.

We actually used this technique for over a month until the machine was able to be fixed!

Don't panic but do unplug the machine from the electrics and call your friend. Explain what has happened; if it has happened to her before she will tell you but more than likely she tell you to call out the washing machine guy as she will not want her machine wrecked by screwdrivers etc. The machine might still be under warranty and she will not be well pleased if you do mess with it as the warranty will null and void. Sorry to play the devils advocate here. Though I understand that you need to get your cloths out of the washing machine err on the side of caution first.

However If you are desperate, get a friend to help you open the machine.... remember turn off the power supply off first.

How are you getting on?

Don't force it open . the plastic handle that you broke off is there because it looks pretty , the actual locking mechanism is metal and pulling the plastic lever just just pulls the metal one ,So if you find what the plastic was connected to you should still be able to pull the lever and open the door .
With regards to repair most machines are under warranty for at least a year and sometimes three so phone your friend and find out , if not go to the manufacturers website and get the number for spare parts , phone them explain what happened and ask what you need to repair it . Good Luck ,

Even though the handle has broken off there may still be a way of putting the handle back in position so that you can apply pressure and open the door. What make and model machine is it? I can look it up and see if there is any further information.

this is not a d.i.y job , you will have to call a local repair man and at worst he will retrieve your clothes but may not be able to mend the handle ! you may have to invest into a second hand machine before her return ! bad news , try the repair bloke 1st and see what he can do . or just call them for advice on the situation .
she may be able to claim the machine on accidental contents insurance .

This happened three times to our Zannusi. I woas lucky enough to be able to get some needle-nosed pliers into where the handle came from and was able to activate the mechanism.

Thin end of a teaspoon will get you in.
after that your on your own.
The door locks are on a timer so you have probably forced it before it was ready to open.
wait 20minutes then try
