It all depends on the time of the year to visit. In Australia weare the cultural, sporting, theatre, shopping, eating and dining capital. There is something for everybody. Many of the international celebrities do their shopping here. Just out of Melbourne you haave the wine growing regions, Great Ocean Road, the Dandenong Ranges, Phillip Island, plus much more.

Welcome to Melbourne, you'll love it!!! and I'm NOT biased!! LOL
find the nearest tourist bureau, of which there are several, and arm yourself with lots of leaflets on whats on, and get yourself a metcard, all day travel on any kind of public transport except taxis, as often and for as long as you want in the one day, and see as much as you can.
There are also day tours to see specific things, my favourite is the chocaholics tour.
It depends a bit on what sort of things you are interested in......of course if you are a sports fan, a must is an aussie rules footy match at the MCG..preferably with Collingwood playing, thats a treat in itself VBG

Catch the trams around Melbourne, they'll take you everywhere you want to go.
