This question can be asked only by a thinking human being, not to speak of numerous other animals who also survive on this earth. The consciousness which distinguishes us from other living beings is so distinct that it is capable of being self-conscious and in the process realises the self and gets merged with the universe. You have come to this world separated from the universal consciousness to realise yourself and merge with the source from where you have come!

You are in this world to fulfill your part in the progression of the human race, and the earth, universe and time itself. For whatever reason you asked the question, the key is to live life and do what you want.

Reason no.1. Your parents wanted or it was a failure of contraceptive but, eventually they accepted you.

Reason No.2. Some consciousness looked for a body to fullfill its desires and to under go its accumulated cause and effect consequences.

Reason No.3. Eventually the consciousness wanted to realise that desire fullfillment cannot make it to escape from the continuous process of birth and death but, the dropping of all desires can....so it takes the forms to reach that state through rational analysis and the realisation.

Good, the asking of such a question, if really intense and with involvement is the first step and part of the answer. The rest of it is to seek an experience of the purpose, not merely dropping the question with an answer that seems to satisfy the ego with a logical reasoning !

The operative word is "in". You are "in" this world because you incude yourself in the subset of matter we call earthings.

You could have used the word "of" to denote that you feel at one with the world around you, as though the world was part of you.

So, I would have to say from your question that you chose to be in this world.

A purpose you were created for is there and intalled in you heart by God. It just only needs you to find inside of your innerself by asking that question over and over again. After sometime a small still voice will lead you to that purpose. It is called your goal in life. At the end we are all destined to heaven as our end point. we are only in this world as visitors. .......its a long explanation but let me stop here
