Yes , its easy and I encouraged you to go free and easy in Tokyo , Japan. There are a lot of places to cover in which a package tour can't include.
I suggest this book - Rough Guides - Tokyo where its very detailed and user friendly plus you need a Japanese phrasebook.
Also, the internet has lots to offer. theres a japanguide.com, jnto website for you to look thru. Also, Fodors.com and virtualtourist.com has a lot of information, tips on almost everything.
Take advantage of those sightseeing pass and one day train pass etc. Its cheaper travelling via trains.
When arriving at Narita airport, take a limousine bus instead to reach your hotel. Taxi fares are very expensive not because of the fare itself but because its likely to stop due to heavy traffic and the meter keeps running.
Food is everywhere. Choose a hotel near to a supermarket.
Experience the thrill of ordering a meal via vending machine. I love everything about Tokyo.
My last trip was 2001 and I went on free and easy . I booked my hotel via internet and its quite cheap because this hotel has promotion at that time. II stayed in Tokyo for 4 days 3 nites and my last day there, I spent it in Tokyo Disneyland and the previous 3 days , I spent it in experiencing authentic japanese culture. Its amazing and Japan is really a unique place to go to. Every person in the world must include Japan in their travel destinations.
I will go on a free n easy again to Japan next year and this time, I am going to visit Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima.
Good luck and happy travels!

There is a Book called Tokyo for Free in which you will find plenty of free resources, even though I didn't try any of them quite...
I found it on the library of my university here in Japan

Tokyo is a great city and as long as you don't go crazy, you can live free and easy.
Don't take a taxi. They are very expensive. Trains, subways, and buses are cheaper and more conventient.
There is lots to do. Look around for good deals. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza, Roppongi are all famous areas in Tokyo for shopping, eating out or drinking. Look around for bargains. Not everywhere is super expensive.
To say it bluntly, do your research and you'll be fine.

Yeah! I've been to Osaka and Hokkaido, their public transport is easy and cheap! You can go everywhere with their trains :p
you have to remember to choose a good hotel ... cause if you don't, you might be able to see some disturbing scenes ... like there was this one time, I saw this old man ... going into the lift with a young "girl" having very close physical contact with each other ...while the old man touches her you know where publicly ... rather lame ....
