Well it's very easy. I paid some 100 dollars for doing course in this. Free for you.
follow this:
*this is for cracking user account passwords*
1)get a bootable cd of win xp. pirated or original. this is the cd you used to install win xp.
2)press a key to boot from cd
3)go into th repair option by pressing R, do this only when the menu prompts you to take an action. you'll have to wait and see that blue screen loading up and the menu will come.
4)after you press R; the screen will prompt you to repair a given os. mostly(i.e when u have 1 os) you press 1 and enter.
5)it will prompt for an administrator password. if u had set one type it and enter or just enter.SOMETIMES WHEN U'VE NOT GIVEN THE PASSWORD WHILE LOADING(ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD) IT DOES NOT ASKS FOR PASS... AND OPENS THE COMMAND PROMPT WINDOW STRAIGHT AWAY.
6)Now the main thing.Type this command on ur screen:
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config
and press enter.
7)The screen will prompt you to y/n for overwrite. Press y and enter.
**you will loose ur desktop settings with this but rest everything will be fine**
**if u know dos u can copy thsam file in system32->config to some another location change the pass word in the new account and replace the file**
** but no need for that simply make an account with the same name as ur previous account u'll retrieve ur settings as well**
ALL THE BEST.
DO GIVE ME 10 POINTS->BEST ANSWER.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The only way to reset your windows password 100% safe is to use a software called Reset Password Pro.
The software allows you to create a boot-disk, that can be made on a CD/DVD or USB stick. The boot-disk can then be inserted into any locked machine, and it's a simple case of pressing reset. Here is their official site: http://www.resetwindowspass.com

You can change a Windows XP installation's product key either by editing the registry or by using one of two Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) scripts. The registry editing method is outlined in Knowledge Base articles 321636 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321636) and 328874 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;328874) and works on Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, and Windows XP Corporate Edition. The script method is outlined in article 328874 and is designed to work on Corporate Edition installations that use a VLK and do not require activation.

One bit of advice is always have a guest user on limited access without a password incase you totally forget again. Maybe keep your password in your mobile or wallet. I do feel really sorry for you
