You're male? Your voice is kicking into Falsetto. You need to learn some control and which sinus cavaties to bounce the tone off of. For low, you have to relax your throat (should always be, but REALLY relaxed for low) and keep your chin down (don't use an overhead ball mic in the studio), and work on the range. You may not have a very low voice. Use good mic technique to make yourself heard; don't just expect the sound engineer to pump the volume up and down. I'd say take a few quick lessons with a vocal coach who does not just teach classical methods (for the breathing and the range and control). Classical singing uses different sinuses, muscles, and less chest voice. You can expand your chest voice into your Falsetto and bridge that gap a bit (women have something called "Middle" voice for this area). You also didn't say what type of music you are trying to sing. Practice, listen carefully, and practice some more, and always warm up first for about 10-15 mins.

Air control and breath is very very important. My suggestion, if you're interested in learning more about breathing techniques for vocalists, look up tips from professionals. Or more importantly learn hands on by taken private lessons, or look into finding a voice and diction class at your college (if you're in college). It's technically a class that ties into acting, but it will go through breathing techniques and it will teach you how to use your resonation chambers in your body. And as a singer, using those resonation chambers will make your job of projecting a hell of a lot easier and you won't have to work nearly as hard.
You can seriously damage your vocal chords if you're singing constantly higher or lower than your range. Pain in your throat/vocal chords, is typically bad as a singer. Any serious singer I've ever known drinks water like crazy.
If the stuff you're singing isn't outside of your range, your not properly using your breath support. Everything is about breath support. Big, deep, filling breaths of air. It could also be the fact that you just don't have the knowledge on how to use that breath support to carry your voice instead of forcing.
I would really suggest taking private lessons this fall. Although I wouldn't stop singing between now and then. But, DO NOT push your self to extreme levels like you just admitted to doing. You can seriously damage and even completely ruin your voice. No screeching. Bad bad bad bad. Pushing and forcing for both vocalists and wind players can prove to be very detrimental and possibly damaging
Easist, most simple suggestion that I could make. Besides finding as much relative material online that you can regarding technique (singing and breathing) and reading it. Sign with a nice relaxed, open throat. Tension in the throat is bad, mmmmkay? Impedes air flow and can be damaging to the vocal chords. Its gonna kinda feel like singing a pitch on a nice open "Ah" syllable. "Ah" is a great syllable to sing on to get that feeling of a nice, free, relaxed and open throat. Because of the way the syllable opens our throat, and its something we say everyday so its easy to do.
Get that feeling, remember it and strive for it when you're singing.
