I have heard 3 explanations, and all 3 people (including myself) are convinced their reason is right. So, what's the real scoop? (I can be wrong if necessity warrants.)

The reason for the creation of Daylight Saving Time was to save energy. Since most people sleep at night, there is no need to have lights on. However, most people went to sleep at a designated time as opposed to when the sun set. The way to accomodate for this inconsistency was to adjust the time accordingly.

The shifting tilt of the earth's axis creates a change in the normal schedule of daylight hours. Since our bodies rely heavily on the intensity of the sun to decide when it is time to wake up or sleep - and we function best when we are most awake it is helpful that our scheduled working hours occur during daylight hours.

It is because farmers need more daylight hours to do their chores in the warmer months. In the seventies when we had the energy crisis, it was thought to conserve energy to have daylight saving time year round. I believe the government is thinking about doing it again.
So that is my take on the situation.

The real reason is for the markets of the countrys, and it is not accidental the the time is setted on "0" at Greenwich, in that way British market is the last that close in Europe, knows the movements of all the Asiatic markets and most of all the USA is also the last of the markets so knows alll the rest markets movements!

i think the reason is to keep the daylight in normal hours. for example in the winters, the day is very short and if you don't do daylight savings time, you get to go to work in darkness, in the morning. generally, you have to wake up in darkness which is not as easy as waking up when the sun is out.

in summer on the other hand if you keep the winter time you get the sun to shine very early which might eventually disturb your sleep. so they move the sunrise an hour later.

because during the winter the sun sets at an earlier time than during the summer...

also to save electricity. it forces people to wake up and hour earlier so that people can take advantage of the sunlight during the long summer days..
