even in a sealed container, chemical changes occur in gasoline stored over long periods of time. this results in gas turning to ''varnish'' at which point it is no longer usable. gas stored in a motor will gum up the carburator, and cause hard starting ,rough running and excessive engine wear. the best product to use is an additive called ''STABL'' which will keep gasoline fresh for years. it is sold in any hardware or automotive store.

Gasoline is a mixture of many different molecules, and when stored, some of them tend to evaporate. This results in a fuel that cannot be ignited easily in an engine. The engine depends on lower boiling point molecules in the gasoline to ignite easily.

Once the engine is hot, the other molecules can evaporate also, but without those low boiling molecules in place, the gasoline often cannot start an engine.

i think the main problem for storing gasoline is the biodegridation were bacteria can break down hydrocarbons by time and that can increase water content,, but also another things can occure as polymerization if any impurities or catalyst appear in gasoline
