You've heard it before - pigeons make this funny whooping sound when they flap their wings. What causes it? How come other birds don't whoop?

I agree! Flying rats. The most annoying thing is when people feed them. WTF!?

i live next door to a huge shed full ot the bloody things ( neightbour races and breeds them)

It's a very simple answer: That noise is air (yes, AIR) being displaced at a high rate from under their wings, similar to the whooshing sound you can produce when you violently shake (e.g.) a tea-towel or a table cloth or when the wife is shaking an item of damp washing prior to hanging it on the line.
