we humans are composed of elements namely earth fire water air, etc if you check in a human body you can see the presence of it. in ancient times when both the body was buried as well as incinerated it meant from ashes you turn to ashes when burned and when buried in earth which is made of dirt to the very dirt you go.

It's predominantly from the Judeo/Christian religion. It's based on the belief that humans were made from dust by God - and that when we're buried or cremated our bodies return to the original form we were made from.
It's also kind of a euphanism for all things returning to their point of origin.
