I asked if prisoners should have rights. The response was great. I think the question was not asked correctly. Why should prisoners have computers, internet, and luxeries such as those? These things cost our taxpayers. Instead of giving these to law-breakers, why can't we use the money for school items, the homeless, and those who are honest and in need? They should have necessities, of course. I honor your opinon and think your statements before were great. It is great to know that our country still has the heart that we should have.

I don't necessary think education alone will help anyone out of their a current mindset of degradation to themselves and others.
Give them WORK to do while in person. Makes one feel as though one as accomplished something. And possibly trains them for work outside. What good is education without WORK and I mean real work.

I agree with your points. I'm a teacher and part of the reason we have so many criminals is because we don't provide them with the skills they need to be contributing members of society. (This has more to do with the decline of morals and ethics among society than with poor schools, though they are very poor today, but the only way we can reverse this decline is through education.)

However, I believe the thought behind all this is that we are "rehabilitating" these prisoners. The problem is that while that sounds good and may be the right tact to take, it is not what is happening, as everyone is well aware. It is similar to a problem I saw when I taught in public schools in the US. We lost sight of our reason for offering public education, which was so that society could have an educated work force and voting population, not because it was the right of every individual to have an education. Now we've put the "right" of the students before the right of society, and so no one is being served. We are promoting mediocrity and cannot hold an individual to any standard because it may interfere with his right to be as lazy or disrespectful or disdainful of learning as he wants to be. We cannot expel students who make it difficult for other students to learn and feel safe at school because that would go against his rights. I think a parallel situation is taking place in prisons. If we are paying taxes to "rehabilitate" the prisoners, it should be for our benefit, not theirs. They will, of course, benefit as well when they are rehabilitated, but currently we are more focused on their rights than on society's rights. We've put the cart before the horse when in comes to rights in a lot of aspects of our nation.

I don't know anything about the computers and internet, other than some of them use the computers/internet to work on their cases....research. As far as TV's and that type of thing goes, here in TN, the families provide that. The prisons do not.
