I think that the Internet has changed interaction in modern society. For one thing, it has depersonalized communication. In many cases, you have no idea about who you're communicating with. If you've seen Erna Bimbrick's avatar, you've got to wonder if "she" is really some old, fat, illiterate guy with a porn magazine, a pair of scissors, and a means for uploading a photo.

Second, it is changing our language; therefore it is changing the way we think. The Whorf Hypothesis in anthropology states that people can only think in terms of their language. The shorthand terminology used online reminds me of George Orwell's concept of "New Speak," in "1984." Language was simplified so that people could not have complex thoughts.

Fifty years ago, the streets would be filled with college students and activist people rioting about the degree of surveillance that we just take for granted. Put a simple label on it, like "national security," "anti-terrorism," or "homeland precautions" and we just roll over and take up the ......

Should we put ALL the blame on the existence of the Internet? Of course not. But, it certainly plays a part in the overall changes that we are experiencing.

The Internet has dramatically changed social interaction in contemporary society by enabling a wide range of people access to the largest series of data banks of information, both useful and useless information, that human kind has ever known.
Communication between individuals that once may have included common courtesies and pleasantries has been shortened to be accommodated in the limited text based information transfer systems such as message services, mobile phone texting,
and these are just the first two things I could think of..

yes definitely. Internet has changed social interaction in our society both positively and negatively. Everybody is awrae of its positive effects. I have some negative points to highlight. Since technologies like Internet and Mobile phones have come in the world, people have stopped socializing. now they meet once in 2-3 months or sometimes even years. whereas, earlier this was not the scene. we from our busy schedules cud remove some time for our loved ones, frnds, family. now the whole concept of socialising is changing.....
dont you all agree with this point?/??/?/?

hi hedzy, i could could desire to assert consolidate social interplay. i think of the question then turns into, is the consolidation for the greater effective, or for the greater serious? The individual is a social animal, and language seems to have progressed alongside with that determination for social interplay. One's convenience point in interacting with others is the main; for shy human beings, or for some who only dislike face-to-face interplay for another (possibly psychological) reason, internet communique opens up their in any different case closed-off 'voices'.

Certainly. I personally love the convenience of the internet, but with that convenience also comes a certain level of informality. Hand written letters and mailed invitations are becoming less and less comon. Shame on me for not having written a letter by hand to dear friends in years. By visiting our friends "blogs" and updating our own webpages, it's like we feel less obligated to keep in personal contact with those close to us. On the other hand however, the internet has allowed me to keep in touch with friends I may have never stayed close to after high school college, moving from city to city, etc. Without it I may have completely lost touch over the years.

The internet has also brought on a whole new dialect of "tech" slang and shorthand, which carries over into our daily "real" lives as well

It has opened new vistas for the global community interaction. Will materialism and spiritualism will be understood for co-existence. If so, it will lead to a better life on all parts of the world and bring happiness all over.

I believe it has. We are able to do more research on any subject and communicate with total strangers as well as friends. We are able to instantly find an answer to just about any question we have. I love it.
