Intranet refers to a local network... A host of computers in a computer class, linked through a network, would be considered an intranet.
Opening up your computer to the world wide network, would therefore put you on the Internet.
Have a nice day.

An intranet is a network that is contained within an enterprise. It may consist of many interlinked local area networks and also use leased-lines in the wide-area network. It may or may not include connections through one or more gateways to the outside Internet. The main purpose of an intranet is usually to share company information and computing resources among employees. An intranet can also be used to facilitate working in groups and for teleconferences.

Intranet is a type of net that is for internal purposes only. For example, a company that quotes their prices over the phone can use an intranet. If you call AT&T and ask them 'What is the rate if I call China?', they will look up your calling plan and then give you the rate per minute to China. But they don't give access to the INTRAnet to outsiders, because it's personal company documents. They can even give new procedures, and stuff they don't want customers to know on it.

Intranet is the network you can trust ( more than internet) like your corporate network. It is the part of your office network inside the firewall. You have similar application running on intranet as there are on internet.(web services, mail etc). Since the traffic and servers are your own, it is called intranet ( internal net)

Like the internet is for the whole world, the intranet is specific to certain users. Like at a big corporation, all the computers are linked and can get to sites that only their ip addresses work for.

The intranet is used in offices to connect many computers between all their offices, even in different cities. It's used for business purposes.

the network I have in my home is an example of an intranet- it is two or more computers networked together in the same location (or in the case of a corporate intranet, networked to the same servers).

An intranet is a "companies" internal web site. It usually consists of company policies and employee handbooks. Most of these sites are password protected; or you need to be directly connected to the server to access these sites. So, unfortunatly, I cannot show you an example.
