Yes, it already seems to have caught up in IT industry. Voice over Internet Protocol, enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using IP rather than by traditional circuit transmissions.

Advantage of VoIP is that the telephone calls over the Internet do not incur a surcharge beyond what the user is paying for Internet access, just the same way that the user doesn't pay for sending individual e-mails over the Internet.

So effectively there is lot of saving. While the disadvantage is that there can be packet loss causing deteriorated quality of call leading to bad line.

yes, VoIP is the next generation tele service. VoIP is very cheap than traditional telephone service & lots of features like video phone & free to rome allover the world. It is a concept of Internet telephony.

with the easy and cheap availabiliy of bandwidth, VoIP has all the potential to be the next gen phone service

me personally i tried it and had nothing but problems. i'll stick with a cell phone i can take anywhere.
