You show your ignorance; the Empire did neither collapse nor fall apart and nor was it won back through war. It was given back freely, even though we were still at the time benefiting from it, because it was seen as immoral to still have an empire after the war. Some countries campaigned for independence, some didn't, but in the end almost all our territories were given independence and they became the Commonwealth, who we still have very strong links with today, and who still respect the Queen as head of state.

And what exactly do you suggest they should do – go back and recapture India or come here and colonize the States again?! The historical moment for outright (i.e. brut-force) imperialisms has long passed – the old political forces of world domination, control, and enslavement have since evolved into much more subtle, mysterious and clandestine forces. You might look at the present Iraq and say: There, that’s a perfect example of modern American imperialism; where in fact that is nothing more than a vicious and costly trap set for America by the true (and mostly cloaked) masters of this world. No my friend, I am NOT regurgitating some cheap “conspiracy theory” babble here. …I am saying, look around and see who has most profited from the American invasion and continued presence in Iraq and you’ll soon realize who the real puppet masters are – cause it sure as heck ain’t America the Free.

The great British empire started to falling apart in late 19 and early 20 centry because the world was changing and entering to industry era, which makes variety of effects, such as new middle class people, democracy and capitalism, and on.
Nations who were under British's controlled desired to be free and seeking their own benefits. With all these reasons, emprire system is no more effecient to control and satisfy the changing of the world. And the great British empire started to falling apart.
One-Nation / Union system is still possible to happen if all the nations seeking the same benefit and keep agreement. But I suppose it is unlikely to submit under a nation forever. Democracy will not allow such thing happen.

They pretty much shut down of their own accord.
It would be possible, I suppose - every nation bears within itself the possibility for renaissance.
Best wishes and God bless.
