your body has muscles everywhere. Sometimes you stretch one or bang one without knowing it. It can even happen as you sleep

"Pulled Muscle" means that during some sort of muscular activity, you actually produced a small tear in a particular muscle. The localized swelling that occurs causes pressure on nerve endings within the muscle and leads to the sensation of pain.

A pulled muscle generally refers to muscle tissue that has been mildly torn during some kind of activity. This can occur from over-working the muscle, but usually refers to over-extending it.

By stretching your muscles, you cause small tears to form. If you overstretch, or pull, a muscle, you have stretched, and therefore mildly torn, your muscle past it's maximum capacity. You have to let it repair itself before being able to stretch again without pain.
