Monica and rachels apartment was rent controlled so they paid a lower amount than someone else living in an apartment that big. Chandler worked for a corporation and made pretty good money and he paid for everything up until Joey got a job on a soap opera. Phoebe was a massage therapist and probably made decent money when she was working but I dont believe it would be enough to support rent on an apartment in NY. Ross worked in a Museum and was an instructor so he probably made good money

It's a TV show, who cares if things don't add up - don't look into it to deeply
Here's a question, how does high flying city boy in eastenders, Bradley Branning maintain a City job, and always be in the square at lucnh and during most of the morning scenes?

Not sure, it is part of the fantasy:
Monica, chef, maybe she can make the money...
Chandler, accountant or something like that, maybe
Joey was almost always unemployed in the first season, NO, later he made money in Soap Operas
Phoebe, crappy musician, masseuse, NO
Ross, professor and museum worker, probably not
Rachel in the first season as cafe waitress no

Very good point especially as they all went through unemloyment and Phoebe and Joey never had particularly good jobs. Oh well, its a good TV series though (still is as constantly on E4!).
