Bin Laden has two main problems with us..#1, U.S troops are on Saudi territory. BL is a Wahhabi (sp.?) and they are very anal about infidels even being present on their holy soil (and to them, anywhere Mohammed took a crap is Holy Ground).
#2, those U.S. troops are there in support of the Saudi royal family, and BL thinks the royal family is corrupt (which it is, but....) and would like to see it overthrown. We're not only in the way of his religion, but his ambition, too.

Bin Laden considered the stationing of foreign, alcohol drinking and FEMALE soldiers an abomination in the holy land of Saudi Arabia, the keeper of the holy places in Mecca and Medina.
This perceived sacrilege is what pushed him over the brink.

Bin Laden was only our ally in the sense that an enemy of our enemy is an ally.

He opposed the Russians and, as they were our enemy, we were glad to see him do it and happy to give him the weapons and support he needed.

Once that fight was over the relationship, such that it was, ended.

Apparently, it was the first US-led was vs. Iraq. I don't think he was ever an ally, however. He merely used US material against the russians in afghanistan but felt no comradeship or loyalty to them.
