140 is very high. Less than 1% of people have that. 160 is like one in a million.

68% of people fall between 85 and 115. 95% fall between 70 and 130.

Only 2.5% are over 130. Hence this being the cutoff for Mensa.

Mean is 100.

Norms are very accurate between 85 and 115, more so than a household scale for weight.

But reliability falls off rapidly on the extremes.

I wouldn't trust anything below 70 and above 130.

Oh - and I wouldn't trust free Internet IQ tests. It takes millions of $ and years of hard work to develop a reliable test...

IQ of 100 is supposedly "average" by definition. Look at the wikipedia page on this (I put a link to it under "Sources"). They show a Normal/Gaussian distribution and 140 is almost 3 standard deviations above the mean. That would mean that 0.5% of the population have an IQ of 140 or above. See other links under "Sources:" also. An IQ of 160 or above is very rare. The lowest estimate I saw on the web is that 1 person in about 1700 has an IQ of 160 or above.

I took an IQ test administered by my college.
I don't remember what the average was. But I do remember that the
first Standard Deviation for average on the upperside was 115. I remember because I was 1 point higher.

140 is high. Mensa still won't take me, though. Freaking Mensa. Seriously. My father has an IQ of 136 and he was accepted. I don't like their policies.

140 should be high enough for Mensa, which only accepts members with a proven high IQ.

140 is at about the 99.75% level (only 25 in 10,000 people have IQs higher than that); 160 is much rarer than that
