I believe the outward appearance has no definition about the persons inside. The person could be the worlds best teacher and could be fully sleeved and gauged to 00's and that wouldn't affect their mind.I am 17 years old, I am about five foot inches tall and a slender (not bone skinny) frame, and I dress modestly, but under all my clothing I have three tattoos.Go figure. The person may choose to show themselves as a work of art for an artist of their choice and the art may represent their soul. You should be more worried about how the teacher teaches your child and how good of a person they are on the inside, not about how much ink they have in their skin and how many holes they have developed in their body.Self image is a free thing in this country and I believe a teacher who is tattooed and pierced is just showing how more optimistic they really are.I believe it shows that they have more than just a square, closed mind.I believe if a person can open up their heart and try something different, it shows they are an even better person.

Teachers of today look very different from teachers even 10 years ago. Since I am a "young" teacher ---28--- and at least half of the teachers in my building are in their 20's my high school probably breaks the mold a bit. There is a Latino male teacher with corn rows that go to his mid back and there are several teachers who have small tattoos. I would say that the fashion is the big thing: tighter and shorter clothing that is in fashion now as opposed to 10 years ago. Wearing jeans is not a big deal at all and you will certainly see teachers in flip flops.
As far as tattoos that are more visible or piercing in the nose, lip, eyebrow, tongue or other non ear places is not that common in my school. I think that even for our laid back environment it is still considered to be too extreme. Schools just a few miles away from mine, however, have strict dress codes for their teachers requiring button down shirts and ties every day. All of this is in NYS, a pretty liberal place. I can only imagine what the dress requirements are in other states.
That all being said, although the public and the students may be ready for non traditional looking teachers, the administrations and the school boards are not. There is just this perception of what a teacher is supposed to look and act like. I know of a teacher from Florida who was fired for living with her fiancé before they got married.
So, imo, teachers should be able to look what ever way they want but if they do so they should be prepared to not be able to get a job in teaching.

It does show a bit of recklessness and a lack of professionalism. I am sad to be saying that, because I'm not a judgmental person, but I am going to school to get an education degree and I know what a potential teacher is expected to look like. Besides that, when I was a sophomore in high school, I had a really bad experience with a pierced/tattooed student teacher. He took his shirt off in class to show us his tattoo of a NAKED WOMAN DANCING ON FLAMING HOT DOGS and his BELLY BUTTON PIERCING. It was slightly traumatizing, to say the least. It might have been less so if he didn't look like one of those goat-men from Greek mythology, but I highly doubt it.

Tattoos and piercings have nothing to do with the quality of the teacher. The teacher should make an effort to have less piercings than some, but tattoos are just a form of expression. To discriminate and be offended because of expression would be wrong. You need to meet the teacher and form your opinion of the person based on the quality of the person.

The tats and piercing would not mean that the teacher wasn't good. Since I have piercing and tats of mine own, I would not be offended. The problem comes in that certain professions are supposed to act professional and that includes a dress code. Teachers should not look like students for many reasons. These reasons can include respect, discipline, role modeling, and increasing confidence. I am a nurse and a very good one. But my tats and piercings cannot show at work except for in the ears. Various professions have a dress code and teaching is one of them.

i'm a high school teacher and i have 3 tattoos. when i interviewed for my job my nails were painted dark purple. i know many other teachers who have tattoos as well. ink or jewelry in your skin doesn't affect a teacher's ability. in fact, it gave me a connection with my students many teacher's do not have. when i was student teaching in kindergarten there was a parent helper who had full sleeves on both arms and he was the best parent helper in that class.
i think the question is very narrow minded. you should judge a teacher by his/her actions in the classroom. your question is really no different than asking if someone would be offended/concerned if their child's teacher had dark skin or was overweight.

Who cares, as long as she's good at teaching.
Just b/c she's a teacher doesn't mean she shouldn't be allowed some autonomy. She's allowed to have tattoo's. Though, if she dresses unprofessionally, that might be something to complain about. But, as long as she's covered like normal, and she has some showing anyway, then oh well. As long as the tattoo isn't terribly explicit, she shouldn't be discrimminated against.

It would certainly not be your "traditional teacher"! That much I know. Depending upon their age, I'd feel a little wary (the older they were, the more wary I'd be).
I would wonder why the teacher had tattoos and piercings because most teachers do not.

i think they should get some. it shows that they do have a life outside of school. Why would it look like they are a bad teacher if they are doing something that they are 100% allowed to do with their bodies!.
i support any teacher that has body works.
