PC is the trademark for IBM PC which was released in early eighty. PC uses x86 architecture of intel.

While apple uses its own technology with MAC..

PC used PC-DOS as operating system in its beginning.. and upgraded to MS-DOS, Win-95/98, NT/2000, XP and so...

PC stands for personal computer therefore MAC is technically also a PC.

Back in the day people distinguished between Macantosh computers and "IBM Compatable". Now we have replaced PC as the common term for IBM Compatable. I presume we do this because it is a shorter name.

Yes, it's common for people to use the term PC as a way of excluding MAC computers but technically PC is also a MAC.

Generally it is the context in which the word PC is used that distinguishes what the person means when they say PC.

For example; when talking about PCs versus laptops people tend to include MACs as part of the PC category. When talking about PCs versus MACs or Apple computers they clearly mean to exclude MAC from other types of Windows based computers.

Hope this helps!

the first computer to be widely adopted was the IBM PC
it is model 5150 and came with 2 full height 360k 5 1/4" floppy drives. It ran DOS

Apple made the apple II and then later the macintosh that was easy to carry with screen and computer in one case.

so there have been 2 camps pc and mac

although now you can put linux on a pc and have the stability of a mac, for the low cost of a pc!

This is sort of a good questions for younger people.

The reason is originally there were 2 kinds of PCs (in the 80s) IBM "PC"s and their clones (ie Dell, Compaq) running Ms - Dos and also secondly MACS now the PC clones are just called PCs b/c IBm is not dominant in PC market but Macs are still called Macs.

T'is a distinction insisted upon by mac users. (kidding) Mac'cers are wierd hippy communists (kidding).
There's always been a rivalry between Mac, and P.C. the term exists to distinguish one who uses Mac, opposed to more mainstream makes.

IBM called their commuter a PC as a "generic term." Before then, they were just computers.

So all these PCs that are called "clones" are actually IBM Clones.
