They tend to be a little too out of the cultural idiom for most Westerners. The singing and dancing do not have the same effect on Western audiences that they do on Indian moviegoers.

At one time, musicals were very popular in the US. Nowadays, American audiences will only tolerate musical numbers that advance the story instead of stopping the plot for a song and dance.

An exception is "Chicago". It was successful because the numbers were good and sexy. The musical numbers made sense in the context of Roxie Hart's fantasies. And the orginal play is a satire on manipulation by and of the media that seems to find new relevance in every era.

A Bollywood director that is successful at making Indian musicals is unlikely to pull off a musical that speaks to Americans in the same way. Not many successful Hollywood directors would even try. Dramas are much more likely to win Oscars than musicals or comedies.

absolutely wrong ! the latest entries for acdemy awards were lagaan, starring aamir khan, it was shot in rural india, and had a different subject altogether, of the grit, and determination shown by a group of all-assorted rural folks, to leran and play cricket, against a team of well- qualified britishers, and aamir khan loved by a british young lady, as well as a rural lass. though the film had dancing and singing, it was relevant to the story and the plot, for a change ! this one didn't succeed.
then there was shwas, means a breath, based on a true story of a very young, about 9 or 10 year old boy, who is about to lose his eyesight, due to a rare cancer, and in order to save his life, it's necessary to take a decision, for surgery. it didn't have any dancing, a serious and sentimental film. then the latest, paheli, shah rukh khan starrer, again a rural back drop of rajasthan, india, shot there, a colorful, vibrant, well-acted, competently directed movie, of a married woman's dilemma, who has fallen in love with a ghost, a-look-alike of her husband. here again, the songs , dances, and back-drop were ethnic, and realistic, beautifully shot. even devdas, which was another entry, based on a classic of well known writer sharatchandra, did'nt succeed, admitted, this film also had danc and songs, but vey classic, and relevant, as the courtesan who loves devdas, and cares for him, when he falls sick, due to over-drinking, frustration, it was a period fil of sorts.
basically, it's the lobbying for the film, which is not effectively managed, by the indian oscar entries.and they are not made to get oscars, but to appeal to masses in india, and to entertain indians abroad. so it's mis guiding viewpoint , that indian films do not win oscars, due to dancing and singing !
indians have their own filmfare, screen, and iiffa awards etc,. stars performing in u.s. gulf, and mauritius etc. so i don't think, they really take the oscars seriously.
may be, the entries to the awards should be selected on the basis of comparison a, and study of the other countries like france, china, japan, sending their films, which are quite off-beat, with a very novel subject, and need not have big budget, for that matter !

Asked like someone who has never watched a Tamil/Hindi movie.
Watch one first. I recommend Devdas.
And if an Oscar was the gold standard of movie making, there'd be no Cannes, now would there?

It couldnt be because of that...it mainly could be the fact of various " strange" encounters and weird actions....well trying to copy the american stunts......But there are some well built movies like Devedas, Lagaan...etc...and less of dancing will be better!!!!!!!!!!!
