If you want to know about a certain country, go to the CIA world fact book. It has a section about the meaning of the countries flag. Each country has their own meaning for the colors, but they do seem to be widly used.

Coincidence, the tricoleur came about at the French revolution, and the Union Flag is composed of the English, Scottish and Irish flags, they aren't connected. (Yes Irish, not the modern day Irish flag though)

The American flag was originally a Union Flag in one corner with red and white stripes, so I assume the colour scheme for that one came from the Union Flag.

Much of it originates with England's time as a colonial power. Their colors were red, white and blue. As such, former colonies like America and Australia incorporated it into their flags, among others. Territories and nations associated with them subsequently took on those colors, like Puerto Rico, for one.

France...I couldn't really explain, Australia actually uses yellow and green, think Oregon U colors for their sports teams, so that's actually their unofficial colors. Liberia has close ties with America, hence why they have the red, white and blue.

I think the reason red white and blue are used so often is because it's just a good combination...

BTW...go Pistons!

The british have red white and blue becuase their flag is a combination of england's (white w/ red cross), scottland's (blue w/ white x) and the flag that the subjected on ireland (white w/ red x). The Americans took these colors basically imitating the british and the story of the red for blood, white for bandages etc. The french used red and white becuase they were the colors of paris. After the French Revolution, france's colors of red white and blue were seen as colors for republic and democracy. Many new republics took these colors. The three vertical bands of the french flag are also a symbol of republics (hence, italy, mexico, france, belgium etc.) As for any other country, its mere coincidence.

I think its because these are the primary colours, and are usually the ones that are inherent in us. So, following on from that, when devising a flag it was probably the colours that the majority of people identified with

Because when colours were originally made the easiest to find for the larger flags were these three colours and they were the cheapest.
