Hard drives used to be affected by magnets pretty easily, but now they're all but immune -- unless you're using an electromagnet that lifts cars or something.

Monitors aren't damaged by magnets, but they can mess with the display. If the magnet is powerful enough you may have to degauss it.

No, magnets do NOT harm PCs. Those who say that they do are misinformed.

They do NOT harm hard drives. Drives are shielded against magnetic fields. CRT monitors generate strong magnetic fields and these have never harmed a computer or hard drive.

Magnets DO cause distortion on CRT monitors. A very powerful one could possibly mess up the shadow mask enough to permanently distort or discolor the image. Manual degaussing will usually correct this except in the most extreme cases.

Magnets WILL destroy data on floppy disks or magnetic tape used in tape backup drives.

+mag -mag +mag +mag etc...
1 0 1 1

Example above shows how your harddrive is laid out in zeros and ones. They become data your processor can understand. Each small unit contains +mag or -mag which is part of a big picture, like a word document or windows startup files.

Additionally it will mess up your monitor!

Knowing this. Let me ask you a question that relates to the answer. "If I scratch a record/CD really bad will it play?" "Windows was a song on a record and I scratched it would the record player be able to read it?"

Simply YES Magnets Kill PC's

Your hard drive writes information on a disc magnetically. The last thing you want to do is corrupt the information by exposing it to stray magnetic fields, or wipre away all or part of what's already on it (such as your expensive operating system, all your programs, and the files stored there).
