Let's say that your history teacher gives the exact same lecture ten times. Sometimes, most students get "C" grades; other times, most get "B" grades. Same action, different outcomes. Crazy?

How about golfers. They use their drivers to tee off. It's exactly the same every time. But the outcomes are never identical. Crazy?

A factory worker spends 8 hours a day, five days a week putting a red nut on a yellow bolt. Crazy?

Yet, the teacher keeps on teaching, the golfer keeps golfing, and the factory worker goes back to work week after week.

Why?

The answer is that each is getting some type of secondary gain. The teacher may "know" that she is getting through to some students some times; the golfer enjoys the challenge of hitting a second shot from different parts of the course; and the factory worker realizes that the paycheck puts food on the table.

Leon Festinger's "Theory of Cognitive Dissonance" hypothesizes that perfectly normal people will do "crazy" things under certain conditions. Hundreds of social psychologists have tested this hypothesis and confirm it.

It's also insanity to do the same thing repeatedly, knowing the same foul results await. If that's a person's work experience, to some degree, yup!

Yes, and everytime you go, you go further down that hole. HEE HEE HEE. Oh sorry. I just got off work. Then again, maybe it's done out of fear of starvation or living on the street.
