We are taking a trip to Vegas.... with the kids (ages5 and 6), what is there to do?

Yeah like she said... don't make the totally common mistake of wanting to "walk the strip", the hotels are farther apart than they look and it super hot and even somewhat dangerous with tons of traffic accidents involving pedestrians, and drunken crowds, take a cab or rail tram to one spot and walk around one or two casinos, then relocate again by cab/car ect.. Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, the Imax theatre at the Luxor, none of the big production shows are for kids, all expensive Circue Du Soliel or topless reviews, kids are free at most buffets. circus circus, New York, NY and Excalibur all have big arcades/game rooms for kids, and the Circus Circus has the adventure Dome, an indoor amusement park, there is a place called M+M world across from NY, NY, that looks like a kid's zone, there is ESPN Zone, next door to NY, NY that looks like it has alot of games and kid friendly stuff, there are the cool Bellagio fountains that go off every hour during the evening, and across from the Bellagio the Paris has a tower to go up, (The Stratosphere, although the tallest tower, is unpopular w/locals and is considered to be dangerous b/c it is in a bad neighborhood, also the rides on top are often on the news for breaking down) there is a gondola ride through the Venetian, but it is a short ride, and the line is always huge, there is a viewable Lion Habitat at the MGM, close the the rainforest cafe, but it is only a huge glass window to look through, there is the Secret Garden (I think that's what its called) at The Mirage, with lions, and other exotic animals, also on Saturdays, in the morning and afternoon, characters dressed as Ceasar and Cleopatra walk around the casino and shops at Cesars' palace for taking pictures with. You can rent brightly painted golf carts for cruising the strip, and those seem pretty safe. Even at night, Fremont Street downtown, is OK for kids, b/c it is an outdoor attraction, a huge screen covering the street with cheesy graphics and music videos on it, there are lots of fun cheesy souvenir shops there, and everyone likes Fremont Street. I always see kids there at night. It is safe there even though the surrounding area is seedy looking. It is well lit and crowded with cops around. Kids are not allowed to linger in the casino gaming areas in any hotel, even with adults, they must stay on the main walkways and keep moving. Make sure you keep your hands on the kids as you move through the packed sidewalks and stuff, don't let them go, people are rude, drunk, wild, (even in the daytime!) and don't think to look out for any ones little ones at all. If you rent a car, drive to Hoover Dam, 45 mins south east, just pass Boulder City and follow the signs on the 215 that connects to the 93 south, it is super hot there by at least ten degrees more, so make it a short visit. Also it's less crowded and hot in the morning. The traffic is real bad both ways there, and the route is always under construction, so don't bother if you really hate traffic.

Recently Vegas has been getting away from the "family friendliness" that it once embraced 10 or so years ago. It can be tougher to find more all ages events to attend especially with tykes of the ages 5 and 6. Circus Circus is good, the Shark Reef (aquarium exhibit) at Mandalay Bay may be fun for all of you. Don't miss the dancing water at the Bellagio or the Volcano eruption at the Mirage. The Venetian is an awesome hotel to just cruise through. There is a wax figure museum and there are some cool street performers who dress like statues and stand still and move really slowly... sounds lame but interesting to watch and the kids can get their picture taken with them and they can run up and drop some coins in front of the performers. Also you can go on a gondola ride through the indoor river system. Most of the strip casinos are not especially kid friendly but the forementioned activities are inexpensive or free and will pass some time. Also if you stay at a place with a killer pool that will help too...ie Mandalay Bay, Tropicana, The Flamingo.

The gondla ride at the Venitan is very expensive-about $15/person for a short ride. Not worth it in my opinion.

Definaltly check out the fountian at the Bellagio, the tigers and volcano at the Mirage, the lions at the MGM Grand, the pirate ships at Treasure Island, and of course M&M World and Everything Coca Cola (go upstairs and get a cold coke in a glass bottle that you can keep for $1) on the strip near the MGM Grand.

If they're not afraid of thunder, check out the indoor storm at the Dessert Passage (at the Alladin).

I've heard that Circus Circus is good, but I've never been there.

The Rio has a ventrinqulist perfromance at 3pm that is kid friendly and not too expensive.

New York, New York and the Strasophere both have roller coasters, but I don't know the cost or heigh requirements.

The Strip is very long, and even I got tired and blisters on my feet from all the walking. It's also hot (85 in April when I was there) without much shade. Sunscreen and comfortable shoes are a must!

There is a bus, The Duce, that runs up and down the Strip but the stops are few and far between (one to two blocks apart at least). It's $2 for adults and $1 (I think) for kids.

As with any vacation, don't over plan and be flexable. When my friend and I went to Hawaii in January all her kids and niece wanted to do was go to the beach. We were at the zoo and all they could do is ask, "When are we going to the beach?" Don't be surpised if all your kids want to do is hang out by the pool.

I would concur with the fellow that said that Vegas has gotten away from the kid's friendly place it tried to be about ten years ago.

Even the places that they did build -- Freemont Street Experience, Shark Reef, Tigers at the Mirage, etc -- are all mixed in with a not-so-healthy dose of gambling and sex.

If your comming in the summer lots of swimming it was 114 today. But its always warm here there is this place called kids quest totaly supervised child care at all station casinos. it cost 6.25- 7.25 per hour but all the games are 100 percent free that is the arcade dance station's big toys a endless amout of things for them to do all air cond. and secure they cant leave until you pick them up. also you think gosh thats expensive think of how much money 2 kids can spend at a arcade in 30 min. you got your hour already gone. m&m world is nice with a free 3d movie until 6 pm.

Las Vegas is not for little kids. Crowded, dirty, hot, cigarette smoke, bad language, weirdos. Shoot, just drive a little farther east and spend your time at the Grand Canyon or Zion. Zion would be great for little kids.
