I had never even heard of this thing. Found a nice article that lays out the whole thing and pokes holes in it. It looks like a fabricated story perhaps based very loosely on a wild interpretation of some astronomical observation that caught on very well.

The Photon Belt is New Age pseudo-science and should not be confused with things that might actually happen.

There is no such thing as a photon belt. This is a fiction meant to sell books and alarm people.
