Maybe your dad was a little thrown by such a frank statement. Some men, especially if they feel a little insecure don't like their women to look good as they are frightened of losing her. He may feel that if she looks really good that other men may find her attractive and he will feel threatened by this. Why don't you talk to your mother about this, maybe you will then be able to decide the best way to handle this situation. I believe women should always make the best of themselves, not only for their men but just to improve their own feelings of self worth.

lots of people get stuck on a certain fashion that they like... & many older people think lots of the fashions these days are ridiculous.
but in their youthful days, they thought their parents had no fashion sense either.
